Kigali, Rwanda, January 30 (Infosplusgabon) - The new Chairman of the African Union (AU) and president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, on Tuesday met with the South Sudanese leader, Salva Kiir, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, amid warning by the continental body to impose sanctions on leaders violating ceasefires in South Sudan.

The meeting between two comes after the head of the African Union (AU) commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has warned the the continental body will deal with those who, with impunity, are continuing to massacre their peaceful populations.

Reports say that South Sudan has been wrecked by civil war since 2013, when troops loyal to President Kiir clashed with troops loyal to then-Vice President, Riek Machar.

According to the humanitarian agencies in the region, the conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, slashed oil production and driven about a third of the population of 12 million from their homes.

Speaking on the sidelines of the AU heads of state summit in Ethiopia, Mahamat stressed that sanctions are important because many African countries have been divided on how best to deal with the violence in South Sudan.

"All the agreements that have been signed [by protagonists in South Sudan] have been violated,” he noted.

The 30th AU summit, held from January 22 to 29, was convened under the theme "Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa's Transformation."

During the gathering, the Rwandan President, Kagame, took over the AU chairmanship from Guinea's President Alpha Conde.
