Nairobi, Kenya, January 27 (Infosplusgabon) - The Kenya  government has inaugurated two committees to oversee the Safari Rally re-admitted to the high profile FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) series by 2020.

The Steering Committee and Organising Committee were gazetted in the special issue of the Kenya Gazette in November last year.

Director of Administration, State Sports Department, Haron Komen  said the project, code-named 'The WRC Safari Rally Project', will be officially launched in due course.

He spoke on behalf of former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, who had just been named Ambassador to Austria, as President Uhuru Kenyatta named his new cabinet late Friday.

Working under the supervision of the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, the Steering Committee is the oversight authority and will be headed by the new Cabinet Secretary in charge of sports, Rashid Achesa Mohammed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday nominated the new cabinet Secretary for Sports.

The Safari Rally lost its WRC status in 2002 when the International Automobile Federation (FIA)  after Kenyan authorities failed to pay affiliation fee to FIA.

The rally's problems are believed to have started around 1997 with the rise of the global anti-tobacco campaign.

Until then, British American Tobacco (BAT), a cigarette manufacturing firm's sponsorship through its Marlboro brand, was assured and adequate.

However, with the rise of the anti-tobacco campaign, BAT was forced to withdraw its sponsorship, leaving the event hanging in the balance.
