Banjul, Gambia, January 26  (Infosplusgabon) -  A prominent Islamic cleric, Oustass Saliu Cham, has accused the Supreme Islamic Council of distributing statements that could incite religious hostilities in the Gambia.

The cleric came hard on the council after it wrote a letter to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, PURA, asking it not to grant a license to the Ahmadis to set up a television station in the country.

Ustaz Cham told on Friday that the council president, Alhaji Momodou Lamin Touray, “should go and read what is contained in the law books”.

According to him, the council is playing politics just to get money as they used to during the time of former President Yahya Jammeh.

Ustaz Cham said: “The Supreme Islamic Council does not own the law… If you look at the state of the country, if they [SIC] incite religious conflict, where would we head to? President Adama Barrow has made it clear he will not interfere into religion and has said that we should do what is best and good.”

Ustaz Cham said the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at is contributing a lot to the socio-economic development of the country.

He said: “Today Ahmadis have built lots of schools across the country. They participate in the health sector. They don’t discriminate against anyone and they don’t violate anyone’s right.”
