Harare, Zimbabwe, December 24 (Infosplusgabon) - Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted the man who led the military action that led to the resignation of President Robert Mugabe and his subsequent elevation to the post of president of the Southern African country last month.

Presidential press secretary George Charamba said in a statement on Saturday that the President and First Secretary of the ruling ZANU-PF, Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed retired General Constantino Chiwenga as Vice President and Second Secretary of ZANU PF.

He has also appointed Kembo Mohadi, Defence, Security and War Veterans Minister, as Vice President and Second Secretary of ZANU-PF.

The appointments are with immediate effect.

General Chiwenga recently retired from the position of Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces where he was replaced by General Philip Valerio Sibanda.

General Chiwenga led the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to take over the country on 15 November after sending armoured vehicles into Harare the previous evening.

The Defence Forces remained in control as they withdrew support for President Mugabe until the 93-year-old leader, who had ruled Zimbabwe from independence in 1980, resigned on 21 November. The Defence Forces then installed Mnangagwa as president on 24 November.

There was huge support for the action of the Defence Forces as tens of thousands of people, Veterans and ruling ZANU-PF massed up in rallies across the country to demand the departure of President Mugabe.
