FIFA Club World Cup: Wydad Casablanca fly Africa's flag as contest begins Wednesday

Abu Dhabi, UAE, December 6 (Infosplusgabon)  - The FIFA Club World Cup, an annual tournament organised by FIFA that involves the champions of each six continental confederations and the domestic champions of the host country, begins on Wednesday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

 

Africa will be represented at the 6-16 December competition by Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, Winners of the 2017 CAF Champions League. The African champions will enter the fray in the quarter-finals.

 

Altogether, seven clubs will be involved in the competition. They are Wydad Casablanca; Gremio of Brazil, winners of the 2017 Copa Libertadores; Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan, winners of the 2017 Asian Champions League; Pachuca of Mexico, winners of the 2016–17 CONCACAF Champions League; Auckland City of New Zealand, winners of the 2017 OFC Champions League; Al-Jazira of the UAE, winners of the 2016–17 UAE Pro-League; and Real Madrid of Spain.

 

The Spanish team are the defending champions. They also qualified for the tournament as the winners of the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League, becoming the first defending champions to qualify for the subsequent tournament.

 

While Auckland City and Al-Jazira enter the competition in the play-off for quarter-finals, Urawa, Pachuca and Wydad enter from the quarter-finals.

 

Real Madrid and Gremio will play from the semi-finals.

 

The opening match on Wednesday is between Auckland City and Al-Jazira.

 

The African champions will play their first match on Dec. 9 against Pachuca at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
