Cape Town, South Africa, December 4 (Infosplusgabon) -  Former president Nelson Mandela's widow, Graca Machel, has confirmed that she will participate in the Heroes Marathon in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.

The fourth edition of the marathon will form part of the provincial government’s celebration of the global statesman who died in 2013.

The event will consist of four different races ranging from between 5 kiliometres and 42 kilometres. The main marathon will begin at the Mthatha Airport and follow the last route to Qunu, where the former statesman was raised and buried.

Machel is an international advocate for women's and children's rights and in 1997 was made a British dame for her humanitarian work.

She is the only woman in history to have been first lady of two separate countries. She served as the First Lady of Mozambique from 1975 to 1986 when her husband Samora Machel was killed in a plane crash in South Africa. She then married Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela in 1998 on his 80th birthday.
