Kenya: Striker Olunga invited for Iraq, Thailand friendlies

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 23 (Infosplusgabon) - Striker Michael Olunga and defender Abud Omar are the most notable foreign-based professionals called up to the Kenya senior national team that will play friendly matches against Iraq and Thailand in October.

 

Olunga, 22, who played for Spanish La Liga side, FC Girona, is on loan from Chinese club Guizhou Zhicheng. He is also the 2015 Kenyan Premier League Most Valuable Player.

 

Omar plays for First Bulgarian Professional League side, Slava Sofia.

 

The matches, to be played during the next FIFA International Window, are set for October 5 and 8 respectively.

 

The FIFA calendar provides breaks during which national teams can play international friendly matches, for build up and ranking purposes.

 

Victor Wanyama, captain of the Kenyan squad, also known as Harambee Stars, an attacking midfielder who turns out for English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, has been knocked out by injury.

 

Other foreign-based professionals locked out by injury are Ayub Timbe (Beijing Renhe, China) and  Brian Mandela (Maritzburg United, South Africa).. Club Commitments have locked out Belgium-based Johanna Omollo.

 

The bulk of the players, who travel to the Asian countries for friendlies, are home-based.

 

Named by head coach Stanley Okumbi on Friday, the team will train at the Kenya School of Monetary Stadies, Nairobi.
