BANJUL, Gambia, September 22 (Infosplusgabon) -  Gambian President Adama Barrow has met the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, in United States, who briefed him on the work of the court and called for support from African countries, the presidency said on Thursday.

Madam Bensouda also welcomed the Gambian government's reversal of the withdrawal process from the ICC initiated by former President Yahya Jammeh. President Barrow was in the US to attend the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

In October 2016, former President Jammeh announced that it was withdrawing from the global court accusing it of going after only Africans.

However, it takes a year to completely exit under by the Rome Statute that established the ICC and before Gambia could complete the withdrawal process, Jammeh was voted out of office in December 2016.

On taking power, the new Gambian President declared that his country would not leave the ICC.

President Barrow has also reversed the decision of Jammeh to leave the Commonwealth.
