Mauritanian opposition leader calls for emergency measures for a disaster-stricken city

Nouakchott, Mauritania, August 31 (Infosplusgabon) - The leader of the Democratic Opposition in Mauritania, Brahim El Bekaye, has called on the government to provide a full assessment of the floods recorded this week in the city of Selibaby, 650 km southeast of Nouakchott.

 

Bekaye issued a public statement on Saturday after making after a field visit to the affected area.

 

During the trip, he extended personal "condolences to the families of the victims" and went to the districts most affected by the disaster to express the solidarity of the opposition "to the families affected by this natural disaster."

 

The main opposition leader called on the government to "carry out a comprehensive census of the affected people, provide them with all the assistance and support required for their situation, create an urban sanitation framework and plan to prevent the risk of flooding that threatens the city during the rainy season, as well as regular rehabilitation and maintenance of the Selibaby/Kaedi road" that links the capital of Guidimakha to the west of Mauritania.
