Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, August 11 (Infosplusgabon) – Tanzanian President, Dr John Pombe Magufuli, has announced three days of national mourning for 68 people who died after a tanker loaded with petroleum products overturned and went up in flames on Saturday in Morogoro, about 193 kilometers from the country’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

A statement issued on Sunday by the State House directorate of presidential communications said during the period of national mourning, beginning Saturday, flags will be flown at half-mast across the country.

Tanzanian Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, is expected to represent President Magufuli at the burial of the victims in Morogoro on Sunday afternoon. The Premier will be joined by ministers and other senior government officials in stepping up efforts to deal with the victims.

In another development, Morogoro Regional Police Commander, Wilbroad Mutafungwa, said the death toll from the accident has increased to 68 after six more people died of severe burns they sustained in the accident. More than 70 other people have been admitted to different hospitals in Morogoro and Dar es Salaam with severe wounds from the inferno.

Most of the dead are residents, mostly cyclists, in the busy area near Morogoro main bus stop who ran towards the overturned tanker with the aim of scooping the spilt fuel.

After overturning, the tanker caught fire that led to the explosion which left most the victims burnt beyond recognition, according to the regional police chief.

Others who perished in the accident were people doing their business around the area, according to the eyewitnesses.
