PM doubles award to Mauritian athletes during Indian Ocean Islands Games

Vacoas, Mauritius, August 11 (Infosplusgabon) - Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth announced on Saturday night that the reward promised to Mauritian athletes ahead of the 10th Indian Ocean Islands Games (JIOI) will be doubled, given the performance of the team that won, for the first time, the Games.


He made the announcement at a reception hosted by the Mauritian government in honour of the athletes at Clarisse House, Vacoas, in the centre of the island.


Thus the reward of 50,000 rupees (US$1,400) for a gold medal goes to 100,000 rupees (US$2,800); that of 35,000 rupees (US$980) for a silver medal goes to 70,000 rupees (US$1,960); and that of 25,000 rupees (US$700) for a bronze goes to 50,000 rupees US$1,400).


In addition, athletes who did not win any medal will each receive a reward of 20,000 rupees (US$560).


Mr Jugnauth also announced that all athletes who wish, can obtain bank loans at a preferential interest rate of 4% per year to finance their studies, the construction of their homes or for personal purposes.


Mauritius won a total of 93 gold medals, 75 silver and 54 bronze, for a total of 222 medals, far ahead of Madagascar, second overall and La Réunion third.


The next Games will be held in the Maldives in four years.
