Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, May 23 (Infosplusgabon) – A Tanzanian Member of Parliament (MP) on Thursday asked the government to allow citizens living abroad to take part in national elections, including voting.

Posing a question to the Prime Minister, who is also leader of government business in Parliament, Kassim Majaliwa, the MP wanted to know when Tanzanians in the Diaspora would be allowed to cast their ballots during elections as it is the practice in other countries.

“The government has done a lot in supervising and executing the CCM (ruling party) manifesto, including strengthening democracy. Therefore we would like to know when our fellow citizens living in the Diaspora would be allowed to vote,” queried Special Seats legislator, Adha Abdul Juma, in impromptu questions to the Premier in Parliament in the capital, Dodoma.

Responding, the Prime Minister said allowing Tanzanians living in the Diaspora to participate in elections was a policy issue that required government’s comprehensive strategy.

He said in order to have the right to vote, it was necessary for the country to know Tanzanians living in the Diaspora, their activities and their citizenship status.

Human rights activists and a section of politicians contend that the current Tanzania laws, which do not allow the Diaspora community to vote, breach the rights of Tanzanians living abroad.
