Bamako, Mali, May 19 (Infosplusgabon) - Malian newspapers  this week reported about floods following the torrential rain that caused several casualties and damage to properties in the capital, Bamako, from Wednesday night to Thursday.

'Torrential rain in Bamako: 15 dead and a lot of material damage' was the bold headline of the national newspaper l'Essor on Friday.

The paper described the specter of this natural disaster and gave voice to the victims in the districts affected by the floods.

In some concessions, l'Essor wrote that floods penetrated into houses, forcing the occupants to cram in courtyards on armchairs, kitchen utensils and suitcases.

"It's an act of God," a victim said resignedly asking the local authorities to provide urgent support, said the national daily.

"Bamako flooded! all guilty", added the private daily The Republican concluding that floods in the Malian capital were the result of a collective fault. "Bamako is dirty and it only takes a few drops of rain to get rid of it. Uncleared runoff, clogged drains, sewage and foul-smelling septic tanks overflow", said the paper.

The Republican maintains that everyone is responsible, from the illiterate to the greatest intellectual who boast of being civilized but who fail to keep the city tidy and discard empty cans and used bags on the streets.

The paper went further condemning the laxity of the authorities in terms of urbanisation, citing as an example, the anarchic constructions, the inadequate or impeded sanitation system, which also add to deadly floods in the Malian capital.

"Do not be deceived, development is the upper tier of a series of stairs and every citizen must participate in the beautiful and solid construction of the walk that corresponds to his period of life so that another can ask confidently to build the next step", the paper summed up.

Another private daily, The Independent, had a photo of vehicles immersed in the water, following the floods and reported the death of 15 people and many others left homeless.

For this paper, the causes of the flood was the same as reported by other dailies. For many years, neighborhoods have been built without servicing, including the lack of gutters and storm drains to clear surface water.

"When drains are insufficient, they are clogged with household garbage because they are rarely cleaned", deplored the daily which is very popular in Mali.

The newspaper pointed out that structures were build in disregard of the basic rules.

"Victims seek a solution", written in red ink by the private daily Les Echos, which said that the population of Bamako was surprised by the heavy rain especially during the heat wave that coincided with the month of Muslim fasting, Ramadan.

For the paper, this rain would have been welcome if it had not caused so much damage, killing people and making others homeless and wandering around in search of a place to spend the night.

The daily Les Echos noted that the administrative authorities are challenged to make appropriate arrangements so that such a situation would not be recur in Mali.
