Tripoli, Libya, May 19 (Infosplusgabon) – The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Libya, Ghassan Salame, on Saturday concluded a three-day visit to Washington as part of his  efforts to restore a unified international position on Libya in a bid to end the ongoing crisis in the North African country.

During his visit, Mr Salame held talks with top officials of the US administration and the Congress, a tweet posted by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said on Sunday.

The United States adopted an ambiguous position with regard to the Libyan crisis after President Donald Trump held talks on the phone with the chief of the Libyan National Army, Marshall Khalifa Haftar.

The two discussed the security of the oil sites and the fight against terrorism, as the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, took  a more ambiguous position demanding the withdrawal of Haftar’s troops.

Before his visit to Washington, Mr Salame made a European tour during which he enlightened the Council of European Union ministers on the situation in Libya, before meeting with a certain number of European heads of government whom he urged to adopt a unified position on the current Libyan crisis.

Armed clashes which have continued since 4 April have so far claimed 454 lives, wounded 2,154 people in addition to 60,000 who are now displaced, according to the UN.
