Mauritania: UN rep Ibn Chambas received by President Abdel Aziz

Nouakchott, Mauritania, May  15 (Infosplusgabon) - Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, on Wednesday received in audience the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) for West Africa and the Sahel region, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, who is currently visiting the country, reports the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).

During the visit, Chambas will inquire about preparations for the presidential election, scheduled for May 22.



Responding, President Aziz explained his determination to organize a credible election in which he will not participate.



In total, six candidatures have been approved by the Constitutional Council to participate in the election.



In a statement, the UN official also praised "Mauritania's action for sub-regional security and stability and the role of the G5 Sahel in facing the challenges of terrorism and violent extremism".



In addition to Mauritania, the other G5 Sahel member countries are Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad.
