Burkina Faso records more than 100 cases of meningitis in southwest of country

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, March 15 (Infosplusgabon) - A total of 104 cases of meningitis have been reported in health centres of the South West region of Burkina Faso since the beginning of the year, health authorities said  on Wednesday.

This region of Burkina Faso borders Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire and is a crossroads.

Recently at least three cases were recorded and a 12-month-old child from Côte d'Ivoire was suspected and placed under observation pending cerebrospinal fluid tests at the Gaoua Medical Centre, the capital of the South-West region.

In response to this situation, health authorities have urged people to protect themselves and avoid exposing themselves or children to dust as much as possible and to prevent nasal mucous membranes from drying out by moistening them with shea butter.

Burkina Faso is frequently affected by meningitis. In February 2019, the eastern part of the country experienced an epidemic that was quickly contained by a massive vaccination campaign.
