Dutch Immigration Minister visits Tripoli migrant centre


Tripoli, Libya, March 15 (Infosplusgabon) - Dutch Immigration Minister Mark Harpers on Wednesday visited the Migrant Assembly and Repatriation Centre in, Tripoli that is managed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).


During the visit, he enquired about the living and accommodation conditions of migrants trapped in the North African country on their way to Europe.


According to a statement issued by the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Tripoli, the Dutch minister met with refugees and UNHCR partners in the field to get first information about their needs, expectations and challenges.


UNHCR staff accompanied the Minister to the Tripoli Naval Base where most refugees and migrants were taken by coastguards after being intercepted at sea or during rescue operations.


In May, UNHCR estimated the number of refugees and asylum seekers in official detention facilities in Libya at around 5,700, including 2,367 people in centres of concern to UNHCR.
