Paris, France, February 14 (Infosplusgabon) - The French government Wednesday expressed concern over the detention of Maurice Kamto, leader of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), an official statement said.

It therefore called for freedom of expression for the country’s opposition in accordance with the law.

"We are concerned about this judicial development and remain attentive to the situation of Mr. Kamto and that of about 200 of his supporters who are detained," said Agnes von der Mühll, director of communication and press.

Kamto, with several executives of his party and the opposition in pre-trial detention, was Tuesday charged with “rebellion", "insurrection" and "hostility against the fatherland" by the Yaoundé Military Court.

The head of the MRC and other opponents have been accused of organizing a demonstration to protest the results of the poll won by President Paul Biya.

They have also been held responsible for damage caused to the embassies of Cameroon in Paris and Berlin in late February.

"The Cameroonian opposition, of which he is one of the figures, must be able to express itself freely, in compliance with the law," added the spokesperson of the Quai d'Orsay.
