Tripoli, Libya, November 25 (Infosplusgabon) - Deadlines set by the Palermo Conference on Libya last month in Italy would have been counterproductive, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whose remarks were reported Saturday by Libyan newspapers.

The Palermo Conference, initiated by Italy to mobilize the international community for a solution to the crisis in Libya, ended without any strong commitment to a specific settlement.

At a joint press conference on Friday with his Italian counterpart, Enzo Milanese, Lavrov  congratulated Italy for successfully organizing the Palermo Conference, which also helped to make an effort for the settlement of the Libyan crisis, "ensuring that the solution to the Libyan crisis forces us to speak to everyone".

PANA recalls that the meeting in Paris, France, last May, had committed the main Libyan protagonists to hold general elections on December 10, 2018, preceded by the adoption of legislative provisions by Parliament.

But the delays have forced a postponement of the elections that were set for spring 2019  under the Plan of Action of UN envoy in Libya, Ghassan Salamé.

Mr Milanese said Italy was counting on cooperation with Russia to resolve the Libyan crisis, adding that "Rome was also counting on Moscow to discuss other crisis zones of the Mediterranean scenario and the Middle East in a broad sense, as well as solutions to solve them."

Moreover, Fabio Massimo Castaldo, Vice President of the European Parliament and figurehead of the Italian movement "Five Stars", said "there can be no serious decision on Syria, Libya and the Mediterranean region in general without the direct participation of Russia ".

"Russia has, in recent years, convincingly confirmed its role as a major international player in the Mediterranean region," Casteldo said during the fourth Mediterranean Dialogue Forum in Rome, adding that no principled decision can be made on Syria, Libya and, in general, on all issues related to peace and prosperity in this region without the direct participation of Russia.
